Cape Horn

Our cruise took us to Cape Horn, which lies at 55°58′S. This beats by far my previous southernmost destination–Nightingale Island–at 37°25′S. We had the calmest waters as we circumnavigated Isla Hornos. Both the ship’s captain and cruise director made announcements and seemed to be in utter disbelief and awe at how still the waters were. These were waters that centuries ago have been known to sink ships as they passed under South America en route to the Pacific Ocean.
