Christmas in Halifax

Mark and I left early on Tuesday morning for a flight to Halifax where we were spending Christmas with Mark’s sister Patsy and her partner Jim at their home in Bedford. It had started to snow in southern Ontario on Monday night and by the time I got up at 3 a.m. the ground was covered deep. According to the Air Canada website our flight was still scheduled to depart on time at 7:50. I shovelled a path down my driveway but the rest of the way to the bus stop was a walk through unplowed snow. I ended up dragging my suitcase behind me as I don’t think the wheels were of any service. My bus to Square One was ten minutes late but I made it on time to catch my connection to the airport.

I got to the gate a few minutes before 7 a.m. and the plane started boarding on time, so it was amazing that with all the snow we might end up taking off on schedule. However, the plane required a lengthy deicing and we didn’t actually take off till 9 a.m.

Once we arrived in Halifax all we had to do was grab our luggage and head outside as Patsy was already there waiting for us. However the wait at the carousel took forever, and it was a while before an announcement was made to explain the delay: the cargo hold had been frozen shut. We had to wait for the doors themselves to be deiced before they could offload the luggage. I had never experienced that before.

Since Patsy was going to drop us off at the car rental office then head out to a hair appointment, she couldn’t wait for who knows when, so Mark and I decided that he would go with her to pick up the car and I would wait for the luggage. I stood by our suitcases and read my book in the passenger pickup area till Mark came by.

We had a bit of shopping to do at Halifax Shopping Centre and some grocery stores. I was able to stay awake through it all even though I only had three hours of sleep.
