Gimme a K

I played two games with Mark this past weekend and we each won one. What is notable about my racks during these games is that in three cases, the only consonant I needed to make a valid 8LW was a K.

494-391. I exchanged six tiles going first, keeping an E. I was able to play EBOnIES (70) on my next turn. And on my third move, I played DELATIOn (66) to the n. I also played CORDOBAS (95). Mark played HEADIEST (76) and TRAILeRS (74).

365-411. I played AbLATED (73) and AEROnAUT (64, a ghastly vowel dump through the R). Mark exchanged going first but on his next play he bingoed with STOREMEN (63). I spent a lot of time with the rack ACDINRU and couldn’t find any 8LW even though there were plenty of letters to play through. Unfortunately I missed one of my favourite 7LW, IRACUND. Turns out that rack makes no 8LW at all.

My first notable rack was ABHILOR. That should have seemed familiar, as I had that exact same rack on May 15 of last year at the Toronto Club. I wrote about it then, and noted that the only letter it builds through to make an 8LW was a K, to make KOHLRABI.

My second notable rack was AEHNOSW. It too makes only one acceptable 8LW, and builds through a K to make HAWKNOSE.

My third bingo in game one was CORDOBAS, and I dropped CORDOBA easily onto a floating S. In this case my K-less rack did make by itself a valid 7LW, so its plural was acceptable. Thus aside from an S, ABCDOOR also builds through that K to make BACKDOOR.
