I cried JERKwATER tears

I had a stellar night at the Toronto Scrabble Club yesterday with three monstrous wins:

557-284 against Doug B. I played HEaVIEST (92), DEvOURED (59), INERTIAL (66) and PEARLING (86). I played DEvOURED through the R of Doug’s own DEVOUR (20). With the rack ABBELOR I totally missed BELABOR, and played BLOB instead. I wonder if I arranged that rack in alphabetical order if it would have been easier to see the 7LW. Instead, I recorded my rack as RABBLEO. I only saw that it could play through a P for PROBABLE, but it also makes BELABOUR, BELABORS and SORBABLE.

559-271 against Peter H. I played NUTRiENT (78), FETATION (74), NECTARS (84), MATILDAs (64) and JIAO (65).

476-343 against Eric. I played ZESTIER (81), NARGILE (75) and DIETERs (74). Eric played pALINODE (70). With the rack ADJKRT? I saw an open -ER- and the possibility of playing JERKwATER if I could only draw an E. (Both W’s were already in play.) There were still five E’s in the bag and I considered fishing off my D in the hopes of picking one, yet decided against it when Eric made his next play which used an E, thus reducing the chances of making my flashy fish. I decided to play off my J and T for 24 and then drew two tiles. The first tile I drew out of the bag was an E! Since Eric’s subsequent play was in another area of the board I realized that I could have made the flashy JERKwATER. I stewed about this for a while, yet in terms of point value only, my JT play for 24 plus my eventual bingo (DIETERs) scored a combined 98, whereas a dinky D play plus JERKwATER would have only scored me about 80 tops.

My cumulative after three games was 1592 points versus 898.
