Return to Newfoundland

I was happy to return to Newfoundland with Mark a couple weeks ago. The first time I visited our easternmost province was in August 2012, when Mark and I travelled there with my mother. I knew from that first visit that I would return someday. Too bad it took twelve years to do it. This time we flew direct from Toronto to Gander, where we took a tour of the airport before we got our rental car. Gander International sees little action these days, with only three domestic flights arriving daily in the summer. The old departure lounge is a time capsule from when it was first opened in 1959. I used the washroom and it too seemed unchanged in 65 years. The room opened into a lounge area where I can imagine men would sit and get their shoes shined. There were even shower stalls yet I don’t believe they are currently functioning. Mark took all of the airport photos:

We hiked the Fox Island Trail near Port Rexton. As we neared the end, Mark, who was hiking ahead of me, told me that I had a visitor. I looked behind and saw a fox trailing me. It followed us to the parking lot. The trail lives up to its name.

Red Cliff

I am looking into the old store in Red Cliff. When I was last here in 2012 it had ceased operation for decades already. Now it is being used as a private residence and workshop.

We walked into the post office in Burin but it was closed. I haven’t seen a Canada Post sign like this in decades.

Quidi Vidi Lake. A wedding party had arrived just before we did for photos and a reception. We ate our dinner–delicious take-out from Coleman’s deli–on a picnic table overlooking the fishing shacks and boats.
