The Mississauga Scrabble Club did not hold one of its regular meetings last night. Instead we held a four-game tournament as a benefit for the United Way. I was the top seed rated 1754 while the player ranked second was 1237, so at over five hundred ratings points ahead of everyone else I had to win all my games just to stay even. Fortunately I did, and had high spreads in each of them:
01 NOSTRIL (63) SKEINED (96) / MOrAINE (65) 469-321 John David
I had played BRR and there was only one R left in the bag. I did not have it yet picked it later. Instead of me hooking BRR to make BRRR, John played his bingo there, making BRRr.
02 QuARTOS (97) / STAiNED (67) 464-320 Mark Hamilton
03 RATITES (82) ROTATEd (65) / none 444-332 Jonathan Gorjao
As I review my racks from all four games I am pleased to discover that I only missed one 7LW bingo. In this game I held EEILSSU yet didn’t find ILEUSES.
04 VIScOUS (76) / none 396-235 John David
VIScOUS is the only bingo with that rack. John lost forty points going overtime.
One of my racks in this game was EEELTTX and I sure would have had a flashy bingo if there was another T available to play TELETEXT. At that point in the game the board was closed and there were no opportunities to play 8LW. It is odd that in these four games neither me nor my opponents played a single 8LW bingo.
My record was 4-0 +565 and I gained twelve ratings points to 1766. As this was not a regular Club night I won’t be adding my wins total to my cumulative Club statistics.
