Scrabble Club / August 14, 2025

I won all three games last night which will end my season with a 74-15 record. Mark and I will miss the final two weeks of the Club because we will be in Finland. We return for the first day of the new season on September 4. I bettered my lowest score over last week, with a 477:

477-391 against Carter. I played Carter one year ago on August 8. I played TOONIES (102), LEVELING (91) and HERNIATE (62). Carter played GAMIFIES (67) and ABSeNcE (104).

541-280 against Azeez. I played DIALYZES (83), CHEERIER (92), WEEKDATE (102)* and SAINtED (86). I was playing second and my first rack was ADILSYZ. I wonder what I would have done if I did in fact go first. Would I have played ZAIDY (56) or passed my turn in some ruse in the hope that Azeez would lay down an E? The only 8LW with that rack was in fact DIALYZES. I shouldn’t overanalyze this as I would have played ZAIDY in a heartbeat. I held the rack ADEEKTW and saw TWEAKED, but it didn’t play. I looked for 8LW and saw the possibility of WEEKDATE, which seemed plausible to me. There were two places to play it through an E. I could have laid it down safely as a DWS for 82, but instead I decided to play it for more points as a DWS where the K landed on a TLS. That positioned the word with the TWS row on the right. Azeez snapped back with JISM for 80. I myself drew an S in my replacement draw so I was prepared to play big there myself, but not that big. There are no 8LW with ADEEKTW. With so many words in my fourth bingo rack, I needed to slot an N in fourth position, front-hooking UNCLE, to make the play a DWS-DWS. There is only that one word, SAINtED, that fits. Two of my racks yielded no 7LW yet only one interesting 8LW: ABENOPS only builds through a U to make SUBPOENA and ADEFGLT only builds through an O to make GATEFOLD.

485-276 against Nicole. I played COATINGS (86), MERRIEST (83) and NOUGATS (73). My second bingo rack was EEIMRRS which makes no 7LW yet I was fretting over playing it through an A to make SMEARIER. I wasn’t sure of the word yet didn’t have to take a chance on it as Nicole gave me a T on the bottom TWS row and I played MERRIEST. There are three other anagrams with that rack: MITERERS, RIMESTER and TRIREMES but the word had to end in T.
