Scrabble with Mark in Europe

During our holiday to the Isle of Man, Manchester, Sweden and Finland Mark and I played 36 games and I won 27, averaging 417 to Mark’s 339. I accumulated exactly 15000 points. The settings weren’t always the most comfortable to play in, as our cabin aboard the Silja Line Symphony ferry was so small we made do sitting on the edge of our beds while squeezing in a square bench between them to set the board upon. Our Tampere hostel had spacious tables in the common kitchen area but they were right next to some rooms and Mark worried that our talking (however minimal) and shaking of the tile bag would disturb the guests, so we played while sitting on our bed since our room had only one chair and no table. The Helsinki hostel only provided us with one chair in a large room, although it had a table, and it was uncomfortable to sit on a bed while playing. We moved down to the lounge on the third floor to play whenever it was free.

60 for me / 33 for Mark

I played UNDERSeA to the -A from the top right TWS down.

During the first game one of my racks was AGLUVV? for which the shortest steal is oVerVALUinG.

I missed a 149-point triple-triple by not playing PROTRADe (the three other anagrams in that designated rack are PReDATOR, PRORATeD and TeARDROP). I was too hasty to play PARROTeD on a TWS for 83 and didn’t look hard enough.

Either in the middle of game five or six, or as my opening draw at the start of game six my rack was AAHIIIQ.

Sometime during games ten to twelve I had the garbage rack of GORUUV? for which the shortest steal is fRUGiVOroUs.

RETAXED was an opening play.

I challenged a five-point play unsuccessfully (NUG) which put my 102-point BEQuEATH at risk if Mark played in that spot. I played the bingo through the Q. At the end of this game my final rack was IIMMOOX. I could not play IMMIX. The shortest steal for that rack is eXcOMMunIcatIOn.

Sometime during games 25 to 27 I had the rack BEHIUW? for which the shortest steal is BUllWHIppEd.

In game 32 I challenged off Mark’s play VIEING (scoring 18) and I played VYING for 40 immediately afterward. We each held GINV and played our words in different places.

PANgOLINS was played after PA-. During this game I also held the rack ACKNOSW, for which the shortest steal is SNOWpACK.

During our final three games I had the rack IKORSTV for which the shortest steal is OVeRSKIrT.
