I normally don’t talk about my transit experiences getting to and from the Toronto Scrabble Club, but yesterday I felt that I spent more time standing up on buses and subways versus sitting down. It’s a long trip there, taking me an hour and forty-five minutes each way. First of all the bus along Dundas to Kipling subway was a regular bus, not articulated, so I had to stand till I got to Dixie. I always get a seat at Kipling since that is the western terminus but at 4:30 p.m. I can never get a seat on the subway north to Downsview. If I do, it’s often not till Eglinton West or after. Yesterday afternoon again I had to stand all the way. I hate having to stand while in transit, because it means I cannot read. After my situation at the Toronto Club two weeks ago when we felt that we might not have enough boards, I decided to bring my own equipment, which meant wrangling two bags (Scrabble bag and backpack) between my legs as I held on to a bus or subway pole. And when I finally got to Downsview, it’s standing room only on the bus ride along Sheppard to Bathurst.
On the trip home I got a seat on the bus down to Bathurst subway but by the time I arrived it was around 10:20 p.m. and the Leafs game had just ended so I had to stand until we got to Kipling. Sigh. I did get a seat on the bus home, fortunately. I didn’t get as much reading as I wanted to during my trip to and from the Toronto Scrabble Club.
I won two out of three, to take my record to 4-2:
531-236 against Doug B. I played DELLIES (76), VITIaTES (74) and YEASTIeR (83). After my first bingo my replacement draw was EKOOOV? which makes no 7LW yet four 8LW, which all rhyme: OVErbOOK, OVErcOOK, OVErlOOK and OVErtOOK. I certainly overlooked the bingo possibilities because I used one of the L’s in my bingo to dump all my O’s to make OVOLO (18). Imagine if I had played OVErLOOK instead! I hate O’s with V’s yet the OVE? possibility should have popped out at me.
345-467 against Mark E. I played DOTTERS (68) and Mark played AUSTERE (72) and also got 70 for ZINGS near the end. I was battling but Mark drew the bag on me, getting SSSQXZ?? to my JS.
472-361 against Glenn. I played VOMITERs (78) and the flashy COPYEDIT (101, from the C down to the bottom left TWS). The only other 8LW with DEIOPTY is IDIOTYPE. Glenn played SEEDIER (76) and cOWIEST (89).
